Elder Voice Advocates: The Value of Long-Term Investment in Strategic Finance

Summary

Elder Voice Advocates (EVA) is a nonprofit dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of older adults , particularly those in vulnerable situations such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Through policy advocacy, community engagement, and education, EVA works to ensure that older adults receive the dignity, care, and protection they deserve. Their efforts include advocating for stronger regulations, supporting families navigating elder care challenges, and amplifying the voices of those who are often unheard in the policy-making process.

Ivanhoe Development partnered with EVA in 2025 to strengthen its ability to secure sustainable funding through grants and other financial vehicles. While their advocacy and mission were well-established, obtaining consistent funding to expand their operations and maintain their efforts remained a challenge. Throughout this period, the ID team collaborated with EVA’s leadership closely to identify funding opportunities, craft compelling applications, and refine their long-term fundraising strategy.

The Hurtle

Securing large-scale grant funding is a competitive and strategic process. While Elder Voice Advocates had successes along the way—securing $26,000 in grant funding before their most recent win—the process of pursuing significant funding pools required persistence, adaptability, and a well-crafted approach. The Executive Director came with deep management experience but no non-profit background. This led to a lack of understanding of what resonates with funders, even though they have a solid record of outstanding accomplishments. Knowing what funders are looking for and being able to articulate that made all the difference in working with the Ivanhoe Development team. The key challenge was ensuring that EVA's grant applications reflected not only the urgency of their work but the tangible impact they were making in elder advocacy.

The Answer

After months of focused effort, strategic writing, and refining application approaches, Elder Voice Advocates secured a major, highly competitive grant from the Bush Foundation for ($840,000). This grant represents a significant financial boost and underscores the importance of tenacity in the grant-seeking process. More than just a financial win, it affirms EVA's position as a leader in elder advocacy and a trusted recipient of philanthropic funding. This funding will allow Elder Voice Advocates to expand their reach, enhance their advocacy efforts, and strengthen their organizational sustainability.

For many nonprofits considering consulting services, the upfront investment can be daunting. This case study illustrates a key takeaway: securing large-scale grant funding requires persistence and a strategic long-term approach. While early wins provide essential support, staying the course and refining strategies lead to breakthrough moments like this one. Large-grant success requires tenacity; securing significant funding demands patience and ongoing refinement of grant applications. A stronger application strategy is key—through targeted revisions and strategic positioning, we helped refine Elder Voice Advocates’ approach to grant applications, leading to improved outcomes. The partnership led to sustained financial growth and impactful funding achievements.

With the momentum from this grant, Elder Voice Advocates is now positioned to pursue even larger funding opportunities and is working with Ivanhoe Development to diversify its portfolio through tools such as corporate sponsorships and endowments. This success story serves as a testament to the value of perseverance, strategy, and expert guidance in securing crucial nonprofit funding. Their commitment to their mission, paired with a refined funding strategy, ensures that they can continue their advocacy on an even greater scale.
